COMMANDER | GEORGE CHRISTENSEN

Greetings Legionnaires,

Once again, I am reminded of what a personal privilege, and pleasure, it is to be the Commander of J.B. Clark post 149. At our last general meeting we had a sizeable donation from a new member joining the post. This donation pushed us over the top to fund three candidates to Boy/Girl State this year.  Harold Olson is interviewing candidates this month, and we should have a report at the next general meeting.

Our Auxiliary Unit 149 is doing so well that they need a larger meeting space, the conference room is not big enough to hold all the members in attendance.  To all the members I can’t thank you enough for all you have done so far.  The unit will be hosting their first event in March, a children’s Easter Party.  What a great start.  One of the unit members is our line dancing instructor every Monday night from 6:30-8:00.  Come on out and join in, it is not only great fun, but great exercise.

We held our Post oratorical contest on the 24th.  This is one of my a favorite Legion programs, I get great joy listening to our future leaders speak from the heart about the Constitution. The support of many volunteers is needed to conduct this wonderful event and I want to thank our judges, our tabulator, and our Americanism committee chairman for their tireless efforts.  The district contest will be held on February 7th, at the Post and according to an email I received from the District 22 Chairperson the start time is 1000 for the contest.  What a great way to spend a Saturday.

Our Americanism committee needs members to help Harold Olson, who is also our Post Chaplain and Service Officer.  There are many facets to this important committee, the Oratorical contest, Boy/Girl State, and American Legion baseball to name a few.  Please join this committee even if you can only spare 4-8 hours a month.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the Sons of the Legion Squadron.  They put on a great breakfast the second Sunday of each month and have spectacular drawings as well with a limited number of tickets.  February 8th, we host the District 22 General meeting and all the Legion members at that meeting show up early for breakfast.  We will be hosting the four chaplains’ ceremony during the meeting’s 11th hour.  Post members are always welcome at any district meeting.

The last event I want to address is Post clean up on February 21st.  We will assemble to give the post a good cleaning as we look forward to spring.  We will also be continuing our Post downsizing activities to create some more storage space in the Post.  Come join us and let’s give our Post a little TLC.

When I say that serving as Commander is a personal privilege and pleasure that comes from all the great activities and service to the veteran’s, veteran families, and community our members participate in.  I am often humbled by the commitment of our comrades.

Yours in Service

George T. Christensen
